Black Friday Horse Rug Buying Guide: How to Choose a Rug That Lasts
By the Active Equine team: riders, competitors and rug designers with 30+ years in the Australian equine industry.
Black Friday is the best time of year to buy a horse rug, as long as you buy the right one. A cheap rug that leaks or tears after one season costs more in the end than a quality rug that lasts three. This Black Friday horse rug guide shows you what to check before you buy: denier, waterproof rating, seams, fill weight and fit. It also covers which rugs are worth stocking up on now, before summer and next winter.
We built our own rug range because we were tired of paying for rugs that shrank, leaked or fell apart. These are the same checks we run on every rug we design, and the same ones we'd use on our own horses.
Why buy a horse rug at Black Friday?
For Australian owners, late November sits at a useful point in the year. Summer is about to start, so it's the right moment to buy a fly rug you'll use straight away. Winter is still six months off, so it's also a smart time to replace a tired turnout rug at a lower price, rather than paying full price in a June cold snap.
Black Friday 2026 falls on Friday 27 November, with Cyber Monday on 30 November. Rugs in popular sizes like 5'9 to 6'3 often sell through first, so it pays to know what you want before the sale starts.
How to tell if a horse rug will last
Price alone won't tell you whether a rug will survive the paddock. These five specs will.
1. Denier: how tough is the outer?
Denier (D) measures the thickness of the fibres in the outer fabric. A higher number means a tougher rug. 600D suits quieter horses and lighter use. 1200D is the standard we recommend for turnout rugs on horses that play, roll or share a paddock. Ripstop weaves add a grid of reinforced threads that stop small tears spreading.
2. Waterproof and breathability rating
You'll see ratings written like 3000/3000 or 5000/5000. The first number is how waterproof the fabric is, in millimetres of water it can hold back. The second is breathability: grams of moisture vapour that can escape. Higher is better on both, because a rug that doesn't breathe leaves your horse damp from the inside.
3. Taped seams
Stitching creates hundreds of tiny holes. Fully taped seams seal them, so rain can't wick through along the spine and shoulders. If a listing doesn't mention seams, ask.
4. Shoulder design
Most rug rubs start at the shoulder. A high shoulder gusset, an extra panel of fabric set higher on the shoulder, gives your horse room to graze and move without the rug pulling. It's also why one rug can fit both a narrow Thoroughbred and a broad warmblood.
5. Lining and fittings
Look for satin or smooth nylon lining at the shoulders and mane to prevent rubs. Check the hardware: double chest straps, adjustable surcingles and removable leg straps are signs of a rug designed for real paddock use.
Which fill weight do you need?
Fill weight is the amount of insulation inside the rug, measured in grams. It's the biggest decision you'll make when buying a winter rug.
| Fill | Best for |
|---|---|
| 0g (rainsheet) | Wet but mild days, summer storms and unclipped horses with a good coat |
| 50g | Cool, wet days in autumn and spring |
| 100g | Most horses through a southern Australian winter |
| 200g and above | Clipped horses, older horses and cold, frosty nights |
A liner system gives you more flexibility than buying three rugs. Start with a 0g–100g turnout rug, then add a 100g or 200g liner when the weather turns. For a deeper dive, read our guide: how many grams is the right weight rug for my horse?

Five Black Friday rug-buying mistakes to avoid
- Guessing the size. Measure from the centre of the chest to the point of the buttock before the sale starts. Use our horse rug size chart.
- Buying on price alone. Compare denier, waterproof rating and seams, not just the discount.
- Doubling up on the wrong weight. Check what's already in your rug room first. A liner may be all you need.
- Forgetting the return policy. Check whether sale rugs can be returned before you buy.
- Waiting too long. Popular sizes often sell first, so have your list ready.
Frequently asked questions
Is it worth buying a winter horse rug in November?
Yes, if you know your horse's size and the weight you need. You'll pay less than in peak season and have the rug ready for the first cold snap.
What denier should a turnout rug be?
We recommend 1200D for most horses in turnout, especially horses that play or share a paddock. 600D suits quieter horses and lighter use.
What does 5000/5000 mean on a horse rug?
The fabric holds back 5,000mm of water pressure and lets 5,000g of moisture vapour escape. It keeps rain out while letting sweat out.
Can I return a horse rug bought on sale?
Active Equine offers hassle-free exchanges and returns within 90 days on rugs in original condition. Clearance and custom items are excluded, so check the product page before you buy.
How long should a good horse rug last?
We design our rugs to last at least two seasons with normal paddock use and good care. Regular cleaning, repairs and dry storage all extend their life.
